You guys, I cannot stop listening to the new Taylor Swift album.
For anyone who doesn’t know, or has been living under a rock for the last 2 weeks, Taylor Swift released her eighth studio album, folklore on July 24th with no promotion or notice. I honestly think that folklore is one of her most mature and arguably the best album of her career. I have never felt physical pain from some of the words she so effortlessly pulls together to create some of the most captivating lyrics I’ve heard in recent years.
I have always been a fan of Taylor Swift, but I don’t think I’ve respected her more than in the recent years, watching the way she handled all the weird shit this industry throws at her with grace, and a fire I don’t think the music industry has seen before. From the series of unfortunate Kanye West events, to having 6 of her past albums being sold without giving her the option of purchasing them. Her story is unique, her songwriting skills are unparallel, I truly believe she deserves the level of fame that she’s achieved.
I’m honestly SUPER excited about this album, and wanted to walk you through five of my favourite songs, and some of my favourite lyrics.
the 1
Come on. This song is beautiful. I think many of us who have been lucky enough to fall in love with someone can relate to this song. For me it’s very reminiscent of a first love, reflective and yearning in the most beautiful way. This song reflects on a love you know wouldn’t have stood the challenges that time brings, but knowing it would be fun, if it did work out, because there’s something so hopeful and exciting about being in love for the first time. I think one of my favourite lines in this song is “we were something don’t you think so?/roaring twenties, tossing pennies in the pool/ and if my wishes came true, it would have been you” UGH. It’s JUST SO GOOD.
august
If you don’t think this is the perfect song to play behind a montage of two teenagers hopelessly falling in love, during the months between schools ending and beginning again, twisted in bed sheets, doing things they know they shouldn’t but they’re just so consumed with each other, please, just close this tab. This song is probably my favourite from the trio of songs on the album that are told from the three different perspectives of a teenage love triangle (the three songs are, cardigan, august & betty). If you are anything like me, and sit down and start analyzing Taylors lyrics on the three songs you will see so many parallels between the three. Like come one people, there’s songwriters and then there’s Taylor Swift.
madwoman
This one is haunting and hilarious. Did the music industry really think Taylor would let Scott Brochetta and Scooter Braun have the last word. The moment I heard this song for the first time, I couldn’t help but smile and think “oh they don’t even know what’s coming”. She has not forgotten, or forgiven, and rightfully so. They way she sings the contrasting lines in the chorus is just so freaking brilliant. “every time you call me crazy, I get more crazy what about that?/and when you say I seem angry, I get more angry” ugh, I cannot wait to watch what she does. GO GET YOUR MASTERS.
mirrorball
When I listened to this album the full way through for the first time, this was my favourite song. This was one song that completely transported me to a different place. There’s so many nods to Joe, her boyfriend as well as nods to the entertainment industry as a whole.
invisible string
This is by far my favourite song on the album. The dreamiest song, but the most honest I think we’ve seen Taylor write about her relationship with Joe. This is the ultimate love song, every single word is perfectly placed. This song also has my favourite lyric from the album, “Time mystical Time/ cutting me open then healing me fine” I have had this song on repeat for the last 5 days, and I’m so ready to hear this at every wedding I attend when we’re able to attend weddings again.
Have you listened to this album? What is your favourite song from it?
I listened to her album on Spotify to see what all of the hype was about. It’s definitely an improvement from her “modern pop” music, as I prefer her older music before she switched to pop. This is coming from someone who doesn’t like country music, but I didn’t mind her songs. As for her new folklore album… I’m afraid to speak my mind here because it’s an unpopular opinion. Her songs all sound the same to me and there isn’t one song that stands out more than the others. They’re not bad but they’re not memorable either.
I personally think that Lana Del Rey has dreamier music than T Swift…. then again, another unpopular opinion of mine. I can imagine the swarm of ppl banging on my door telling me that I’ve lost my mind. Good thing I’m not famous! 😂

Girl !! No I thought the EXACT same thing the first couple of times that I listened to it through, what was a HUGE game changer for me was listening with the lyrics up and really understanding the story telling element – WHICH SHE IS INSANE AT. She is one of the best song writers of our generation.
You absolutely have not lost your mind, thank you for reading and commenting 🙂

UGH, how have i not listened to this yet? I definitely have a lot of respect for how she’s handled herself in recent years – she’s had a whole lot slung at her, but she always handles things really gracefully xx

I like some of TS’s big tracks….”Style”, “Shake-It-Off”, “Wildest Dreams”, Lover” “I Only Word This Dress So You Could Take It Off”….
I like this album too….I really really love the track called Exile. It really chokes me up. Love Mirrorball. There is a song I quite liked called “Illicit Affairs”….I kind of enjoyed “Betty” too.
I give it a definite thumbs up. But I will say this….I don’t think she should stick to one style. She has proved herself very versatile and diverse. She creates fantastic pop and I think that’s super. But I for one, can’t cope with pop all the time. I have to be in the mood for it. So it’s great to have something different from her. This lady can give any genre a try and I am sure she is capable of pulling it off. I hope she does not confine herself to any one genre. If she said every album from now on was going to be just like Folklore, I don’t think I’d be keen But this is a great album for now.
I am not a fan of any musician, but I do respect that she has great talent and I definitely have enjoyed and will continue to enjoy some of her music.

Omg! I haven’t listened to her album yet but I found out that she has a collaboration with Bon Iver (one of the most underrated artist and one of my fave) so I might give it a try. To be honest, I always know that Taylor Swift will always have good songs and seeing her get sad about not getting a nomination from Grammys (from her Netflix documentary) really broke my heart. I don’t think she should think less of her because of that.

This is so true, this album literally saved the year. My favourite songs from it are the invisible string and trying. She rises above all that’s thrown at her. she’s a queen

I literally used to go around telling people I hated Taylor Swift because I was so influenced by the sexism in society that allows people to collectively hate on and belittle art that a large number of girls and women like, but thankfully I educated myself because I was really missing out on some great talent! I love this album so much and I really feel like she’s taken back her power with it – it’s so great!

Taylor Swift, Taylor Swift, Taylor Swift. Omg Xandria, me too. Me too. Me toooooooo! I have not been able to stop listening to this soundtrack. It is her BEST to date. The lyrics are haunting and real and beautiful. The storytelling is so interwoven and atmospheric and soul crushing. The melodies I will be humming under my breath for days and months and let’s be real, years. Invisible String is 100% going to be played at my future wedding (whenever that is) for damn sure. August is so bittersweet and relatable. Betty makes me want to cry and punch something at the same time. Cardigan has all my feels and the feels just keep growing and growing… I’m so glad we are on the same waveline with this!! ❤ Sending all the love and good vibes your way as I keep my ears plugged with this album haha! 😀

By far the most incredible album Taylor Swift has come out with! It’s definitely got a much more mature and thoughtful feel to it than some of her previous music. She’s reached within herself and found her true essence as an artist and song writer and I couldn’t be happier about that. My favourite songs have got to be August, the Last Great American Dynasty and Invisible Strings.
